Museum Profile

  • The present West Bohemian Museum in Pilsen was established in 1878. 
  • The museum is an allowance organization of Pilsen Region and an institution administering collections per Act No. 122/2000 Coll., on collections.
  • The museum is authorized to conduct archaeological research per Act No. 20/1987 Coll., on state preservation of monuments.
  • The collections comprise approximately 2 million items. The museum has about 80 thousand visitors per year. As many as 150 employees work for the museum.
  • With the extent of the historical, arts & crafts and scientific collections, the museum belongs to the greatest museum institutions in the Czech Republic.
  • The museum is engaged in the following scientific disciplines: Archaeology, Ethnography, History, Modern History, Palaeontology, Prehistory, Ancient History, Arts & Crafts, Zoology, and Botany.
  • At present, the museum is spread in the following buildings: Museum of West Bohemia in Pilsen (quoted here as Main Building ), Ethnographic Museum of Pilsen RegionPuppet MuseumMuseum of Religious Art of Pilsen DioceseMuseum of Dr. Bohuslav Horák in Rokycany, and Water Hammer Mill in Dobřív
  • In addition to the exhibition activities, the museum organises lectures, guided tours, educational programmes for schools and the public, creative workshops, fairs and suburban camps
  • The representative rooms of the museum are still more frequently used to organize wedding ceremonies, concerts and other cultural and social events.
  • The Main Building of the museum includes an extensive library with a reading room and a lecture hall.
  • From the early 1990s, the museum is developed through grants and institutional tasks, scientific and research works. It issues a number of specialist publications and collections of works of scientific and social focus.
  • The museum was awarded prizes within the prestigious national competition Gloria musaealis.
  • The West Bohemian Museum in Pilsen is a member of the Association of Museums and Galleries of the CR.
